Hospice Volunteers

How can I become a volunteer?

Hospice volunteers can make an amazing difference in the everyday lives of patients and their loved ones

An important part of the hospice team is volunteers.  A volunteer may run errands or simply provide companionship to patients, as well as intervals of rest for caregivers. As a hospice volunteer, you will be oriented to a specialized program so you can understand our mission, philosophy, and goals.

We will give you the skills needed to assist patients and their families.  You will find it to be the most rewarding thing that you can do to make a difference in your life and someone else’s life.  Volunteering affirms and enhances your acquired skills and knowledge.

Hospice Volunteer FAQs

Our volunteers are the heart of the hospice team. We depend on our hospice volunteers to assist us in providing compassionate support and care to our patients and their loved ones during this difficult time in their lives.

Our volunteers offer support, companionship and practical care to our patients. Whether it’s running errands, sitting with a patient to provide relief for the care giver, reading to a patient, helping a patient write in his/her journal or providing the power of presence. As a hospice volunteer, you will truly make a difference.

Volunteers can also provide:

  • Administrative Support
  • Bereavement Support
  • Special Projects
  • Pet Therapy

Our hospice volunteers are trained within a specialized program so they can fully understand our mission, philosophy and goals. We offer free training to all our volunteers, including:

  • Two-step TB Screening (required for all direct patient volunteers)
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine (optional)
  • Flu Vaccine
  • Blood Pressure Check

Also, bi-monthly education and training addresses a wide-range of patient needs:

  • Comfort Measures
  • Emotional Support
  • Universal Precautions
  • Elder Abuse
  • Cultural Diversity
  • Alzheimer's and Dementia Training

There’s a lot to gain from being a hospice volunteer.  Satisfaction, greater self-knowledge and spiritual growth.

Volunteering as little as a couple of hours a month can provide assistance to a patient or their family at the time when they need it most.  The volunteer’s need varies from patient-to-patient.  The flexibility of our hospice volunteer programs allows us to find the ideal level of service that is best suited for families needing our support and care during a difficult time.
